What Alice Knew by T.A. Cotterell

What Alice Knew by T.A. Cotterell
Genre: Mystery
Rating: 4/5

Alice has a perfect life and then the mysterious calls started... is her husband having and affair or is he having something else? Did she really know what was he hiding or it's better to remain unknown of the truth? This is a difficult choice, but no matter what she decides, her life will change completely.

"People reach an age where they have to live their own lives. Too often beautiful boys make unhappy men. I flicked through the new pages. There was an article about Araminta Lyall with the 'Dering Street' picture in colour: royal blue chocker, pencil skirt, siren smile".

I have to say I was completely startled with this book, it makes you rethink your life and how you see the people near you; T.A. Cotterell makes fear an art!
This is a slow pace crime book, you will feel Alice's agony on your skin, her life will never be the same but she has to decide, living with fear or telling the truth. Who will win?
Can you feel Alice fear? The hear racing, how the things go slower, the silence in every corner...
This is one of these books that after you read it you have to re-read some of the pages and think about what you have read, because it's fiction but Alice doubts and fears are so real that you will have your own doubts to decide what to do!
This book will be with me for a long time, and I would like to have a hole to know how's Alice living right now!
Do you prefer the truth or a white lie?

Beneath The Ashes by Jane Isaac - Blog Tour

Beneath The Ashes by Jane Isaac
Genre: Crime, Mystery
Source: Legend Press
Rating: 4/5

We start the book knowing that there's a corpse in a fire... the police starts to investigate when they find that the possible victims girlfriend doesn't remember anything from the fateful night... Is she lying or someone attacked them? The police has a lot of questions and I am sure you too, you just have to start reading the book to know the answers! ;)

"My name is Nancy Faraday. I'm in the farmhouse where Evan is living. But even as the words drifted into the ether, two questions rang out in her mind. How did I end up on the floor? And where in the hell is Evan?"

This is the second book of Detective Inspector Will Jackman, but you can read it as standalone, Jackman is trying to get promoted while he is investigating the body found in the fire. He is a police, but not like the ones we are used to, he is approachable, real, could be one of your neighbours, but with a very difficult job! Have you ever thought how can police officers can sleep after the cases they have to see? They might have nightmares every night!
I would like to comment more about the book but I would spoil all the mystery in it, so you will have to read it and think about how you would feel if you were one of the victims. I wouldn't know how to explain the pain and sadness I would be feeling. That makes me think that no matter how horrible our life could be, sadly there's someone who is having more pain than us, quite an awful thought, don't you think?
This book is a quick read, but it will get deep on your skin, it's human and touchable but at the same time scary on how real it could be. A crime book that you will not want to miss.
Do you talk to your family?

Zero by Matt Brolly

Zero by Matt Brolly
Genre: Dystopian World
Rating: 4/5

In this dystopian world, where there's zero tolerance against crime, a Judge has been kidnapped... Inspector Kate Swanson and Sergeant Joseph Keane are investigating the kidnapping, but there is no one trying to help them... Who is really involved? Are they against or in favour of Zero Tolerance?

"As Swanson drove through the city to Judge Lloyd's house, she tried not to think about the sentence just handed down to the young petty thief. The policy of Zero Tolerance, ZT, was fixed legislation. Its powers could not be withdrawn, only extended. At present, any breach of criminal law, subject to a fair trial before judge and jury, was subject to the death penalty. Swanson had been working in the police force for the last eight years and had never known a society without the pods."

I have to say that this book surprised me, reading about a dystopian world is not always easy, but this book was a lucky find!
This book has some similarity with the movie Minority Report, where they try to arrest the murderers before the crime. But in this world is a bit more exaggerate, Zero Tolerance started trying to remove the guns from society, and has ended with everyone who has broken the law put in a glass prison starving to death, literally! There are people against it, but specially the politic power wants to promote it, so if nothing changes there will have Zero Tolerance for a long time!
In the beginning there were too many characters and it was difficult to follow, but as you started entering in the story, every piece started to fit and you just wanted to know more...
I have to say I missed some background about the characters, we don't know much about Kate's past, just that her mother died in a pod, but Why? And Keane? Why he has to flirt with every woman he sees? Seems that he doesn't have very much interests in his life apart from women... This will be the first book of a series of Zero Tolerance story, so I hope we will learn more about them in the future.
Matt Brolly delighted us in a police investigation where hopes are surrounded in glass and everyone can see them but no one can help...
Do you believe in Zero Tolerance?

Brides And Bouquets by Rebecca Raisin - Blog Tour Love Reading Romances

Brides And Bouquets by Rebecca Raisin
Genre: Romance
Rating: 4/5

Do you remember Clio from Cedarwood Lodge?
It's almost Christmas and she is preparing the Lodge for a Wedding Fair, but before she could open the doors she will have to face some serious problems; a chef resignation, a couple in conflict, a missing paper... so many more troubles that maybe there will be no brides!

"'Tell me this place isn't haunted, Clio,' a wideyed Amory said, clutching a loop of silver tinsel to her chest life a safety blanket.
'With the ghost of boyfriends past?' I teased, warming my hands by the fire. It crackled and popped, a comforting soundtrack to frosty nights with us holed up in the lodge, working away in one room or another."

This is the second part of the Cedarwood Lodge trilogy, don't read it alone, you will miss everything!
I can not say I didn't like this book, but there are so many unanswered questions at the end that it's like there are missing pages! But I can not deny that it was a sweet read, you just have to enjoy the read and the warm feelings and happiness that Cedarwood transmit, I hope one day I can visit it! ;) Yes, I know there's something mysterious too about Cedarwood Lodge, but where's the happiness without a little bit of mystery in life!
I can not wait to read Midnight & Mistletoe at Cedarwood Lodge, maybe we will know more about Clio's mother secret or who will have Clio's heart (that's my big question!)
Reading this series is like a marshmallow, sweet and fluffy that you just want to enjoy page by page and don't miss anything!
Rebecca Raisin makes us dream with happy endings and that even if you have a big problem, you will always find the solution! Be careful if you start reading this book... Rebecca Raisin books are addictive!
Do you have the perfect ending?

If you have some curiosity, here's an excerpt of the book! ;)

Clio,
I hope the bridal expo goes off without a hitch. Have I told you yet that I’m glad you came home? Life was never really the same after you left. Looking forward to that dinner whenever you’re free.
Timothy x

Life was never really the same? But he got married and had a family about three minutes after I was out of sight! I’m sure I wasn’t on his mind one little bit. I didn’t hold any grudge or strong feeling about it – we’d been so young, really. But still, he had moved on fairly quickly. Would something bloom between us if I just let go and lived for the moment? The same niggle bothered me. Kai. Even if nothing happened with him, would it be fair to date Timothy when secretly my heart beat a double rhythm when I thought of my Australian surfer guru?
Taking my cell, I hastily sent Timothy a thank you text back, avoiding any talk about the dinner date invitation.
This was why I loved work. Being busy gave me the ability to shelve any boy dilemma and focus on the task at hand. I found a crystal vase and took the bouquet to my office. That done, I went back to the ballroom and checked off my list.
Every vendor was accounted for, set up and ready to go. Isla and Micah had the activities organized. Aunt Bessie was getting her donuts out of the van and ready to serve… so what was I missing? I’d forgotten something, I could feel it.
I wandered around the tables we’d set up in different themes, lifting champagne flutes, checking for smudges. The cutlery was lined up perfectly reflecting prisms of light from the chandeliers. Georges would serve canapes as soon as the guests – Georges! Normally he’d be singing and bellowing in the kitchen, foodie scents wafting down the hallway making my mouth water, but I hadn’t seen him arrive yet. I dashed down the hall to check. The kitchen was empty, not a pot on the stove and more worryingly not a sign of Georges. Snatching up the phone I called him, picturing the worst – a car crash, the roads were slippery this time of year. My heart was in my throat by the time he answered on the third ring.
“Hi Clio, did you get my message? I’m sorry to let you down like this, but I couldn’t say no, you understand, don’t you?”
Blood drained from my face as I checked my watch. Three hours until our brides were due and my chef was telling me he wasn’t coming. Trying to halt the erratic beat of my heart I said, “What message, Georges? Where are you?”

Ragdoll by Daniel Cole

Ragdoll by Daniel Cole
Genre: Crime, Thriller
Rating: 5/5

First of all I want to thank Trapeze for allowing me to read this book, I couldn't put it down!
Everything starts with a body, but not a normal body, a body made with parts of other victims! Who are the victims and what does it mean?
Wolf, the most infamous detective in London will be in charge of this case, but when a list with possible next victims killer appears, it starts the countdown... Will the police be able to stop the killer before any more deaths? Or would this be the next unstoppable serial killer?

"Baker picked up the half-empty bottle of red wine.
'Wine?' she offered pleasantly.
'Depends, what kind is it?'
'Red.'
'I can see that. I meant: where is it from?'
'Morrissons.'
'No, I mean... I'll pass.'
Baxter shrugged and returned to her box."

This book reminds me of Luther, the tv series, with a dark police detective that his right and wrong views are in a blur, he's only objective to catch the killer!
Ragdoll is not just the story of a killer, it has trimmings of the police, the journalists and the victims of this violent serial killer. The story is catchy, but dark and gripping too, that's why this is an amazing thriller!
Daniel Cole has created an amazing book, bits of mystery, disturbing murders, some humor and a Wolf! What else can we ask for?
This is not just a page turner book, you will empathise with the police and the victims, and you will feel the countdown on your own skin! Can you imagine that you know the day you will die and not being able to change it? Six people are on this list, and the police has no idea who is killing them. They will try to solve the mystery before it's too late. I am not sure it will be soon enough...
There are a lot of serial killer books, why this one is must a read instead of another one? Because it's not just the writing that keeps you glued on the book till the end, it's like an addiction, you just want more!
I would like to ask a few questions to the writer...
  • Why this ending? I have to say it completely shocked me!
  • Will we know more about Wolf? I like very much the character, his personal life and his moral, can I ask for more, please??
  • What do you prefer, journalists or police? This is quite a tricky question... Police interrogate and investigate... but journalists too... Who is more noisy?

Sometimes, trying to make the right we make the wrong... Are you a sheep or a wolf?
