Caliu - Català; Ara i Sempre

I know I've been absent for more than a week, but I returned to Catalonia to visit family for a few days and even if I try to maintain my blog when I am there, I am so exhausted that I only post the blog tour I already committed, sorry!
Today I return with a beautiful word, Caliu,  I've tried to search a similar word in English and Spanish and I haven't had any luck... so I'll try to explain what it means...
Caliu it could mean cooking something with the live coal, after the fire has extinguished, the remaining coal that is still hot. If you never tried it, it tastes delicious, cover a potato with foil and let it cook for 30 minutes...!
Or Caliu could mean too, a sweet atmosphere inside a place, good vibrations between the people.

Nowhere To Hide, Destination Wild - National Geographic Advertising

Take a look at these original posters for the Nat Geo Wild, amazing!

Combining both predators and their prey into a single canvas using negative space to express the predatorial and vulnerable glory. The posters feature animals and visual tricks, such as the outline of an unsuspecting bunny rabbit between the legs of a bird of prey, and a giant squid using its tentacles to form part of the outline of a sperm whale.

Sasha is having a busy month at the Bear family factory, so when she discovers a body, she will be more stressed than ever! Of course she will not be able to stay away, so she will try to discover the truth. Ready for a Bear murder?

'"Sometimes joking takes the edge off a very nasty truth." The elderly lady who'd first asked about the room nodded wisely, her hands as shaky as her voice. "I read somewhere, and it's true. 'There's a thin line that separates laughter and pain, comedy and tragedy, humor and hurt.' I love that quote"
"Who said that, Hannah? William Shakespeare?" Walter asked.
"Erma Bombeck," she said. "You should know, you gave me that book!"
The seniors all laughed. "I've got a better one," Walter said." 'Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never make them all yourself.' Groucho Marx."'

I like the main character of the story, Sasha, how tries to balance the stressful family, the busy work and starting to date again. So trying to discover a killer will make this busy life tremble a little around her, but if anyone is capable of doing twenty things at the same time, this is Sasha!
As the previous book of the series, I can not stand Sasha's mother, really, how a mother would want a cheater with her daughter? Totally unbelievable! But Sasha, as always doesn't complain at all, simply closes her mouth when her mother tries to plan all type of dates with her ex-husband...!
Every time I read one of the books of the "A Teddy Bear Mystery" series makes me want to take a look at the factory and see all the amazing bears they create, I imagine them so cute... This is the second book of the series, but you can read it as standalone.
I can not forget to talk about the victim, because really, she doesn't have many friends, but there's no one with a strong motive to kill her... On the other side, her business partner, Holly, she has a long list of enemies, even our main character, Sasha... So, who was the real target, Gina or Holly?
All the story is told around the Oktobear Feast, it was really original reading about all the bear creations and ideas for kids, really, if this kind of village exist I want the name of the town!
Ready for a cute mystery, full of twists and sweet bears?

Sounds interesting? Good luck in the Giveaway! ;)

Fault Lines by Doug Johnstone - Blog Tour

Surtsey feels like her world is trembling behind her feet, not only she has found her secret lover dead but the killer is also sending cryptic messages to her... Will she be strong enough to survive the next seismic movements in her life?

"'Surtsey's an interesting name,' Ferris said.
She got asked about it all the time.
'I'm named after an Icelandic island,' she said. 'A volcanic island, like this one, that erupted in the 60s. My mum says it's her favourite place in the world. She's a volcanologist, like me. Actually I was born the day this place erupted.'"

I have to admit I felt a little bit of myself on this book, I studied Geology and I am fascinated by geological places and I can totally understand the disconnection you feel in the world when one of your parents is dying from cancer. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer, my connection to the real world was my family, for Surtsey it is her secret lover... So when she discovers his body, it seems that her world is crumbling below her feet...
The author, Doug Johnstone, has done a great job explaining the disconnection, the lost feeling, the cloudy thoughts that Surtley is living. If you have not lost any of your parents it could seem that this book is strange and cold, but when you have to face the death of one of your loved ones, your actions start being less important and the world seems too big to cope with everything. I am not giving an excuse for Surtley to have an affair, but I don't think she is really thinking what she is doing, simply living, waiting for the end...
It was interesting reading about euthanasia, how is still forbidden almost everywhere in the world, but when someone near you asks about it, you start rethinking what you think about it...
Yes, of course there's a murder, and let me say that if Surtley wasn't receiving messages from the killer I would thought she was the killer! Because, if you think about it, there's no one that could have strong motives to kill him... So what has really happened?
Let me say I didn't like much how the author showed the PhD's life... I am in the academic world, and if any PhD spends all day drinking and smoking they would not have a long career as a scientist.
Be prepared for an emotional read; sad, realistic and intriguing that will make you understand that even if you plan everything, life is always unexpected.

The Old You by Louise Voss - Blog Tour

The Old You by Louise Voss
Genre: Noir Mystery
Source: Orenda Books

This is one of the must read books of this year 2018, a truthfully domestic noir book.
Lynn Naismith is trying to cope with the sad diagnostic that her beloved husband is on the first stages of dementia, they are trying to adjust to the new situation when some strange things start to happen...
Between flashes from the past and the present we will connect the dots of this suspenseful book, it will leave you totally astonished and glued till the end!
I liked this book not simply for the twisted and original plot, but how Louise Voss makes us feel not a mere observant of the plot but feeling everything on our own skin, real.
I don't want to make any spoiler, so please read it, and then ask yourselves if I didn't tell you it was an amazing book!

Death Is Not Enough by Karen Rose - Blog Tour

Death Is Not Enough by Karen Rose
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Source: BookBridgr
Amazon

No matter how many books I've read of Karen Rose, I am always glued to the story and characters of the new book!
This time, as the title advances us, death will not be enough punishment for our main character, Thomas Thorne... or this is what the "bad man" of the book thinks. He wants him to suffer, that's why he creates the "perfect" murder scene, a nude woman dead with Thomas on his side, of course with a knife with his fingerprints on it. The only problem is that Gwyn Weaver, more than a friend, will find him too soon, making the police not really believe that he could have killed the woman... so who could have motives to involve Thomas in a murder and with some links with his darkest past?
Since the beginning we know that the killer has contact with the characters, but we don't know the name, only connections and how good he is killing and making suffer the ones he doesn't like... So be prepared to eat your nails all the story terrified of what could happen if they are taken by the mad man.
I liked very much the story between Thomas and Gwyn, tender but strong at the same time. Two persons that had their own demons from the past, but try to get over them together... You could feel their feelings evolving, but the fear that it may be go wrong or that they will not survive this killer!
Another great read by Karen Rose; mystery, action, suspense and romance, what more do we need?

The TV Detective by Simon Hall - Blog Tour

The TV Detective by Simon Hall
Genre: Mystery
Source: Damppebbles

Today I want to introduce you the new Simon Hall book, The TV Detective, I have to admit I haven't read it, but I am sure you'll be intrigued as I am after reading the book blurb! Take a look...

Dan Groves is a television reporter newly assigned to the crime beat and not at all happy about it.
Dan knows next nothing about police work or how to report on it so when he persuades Detective
Chief Inspector Adam Breen to allow him to shadow a high-profile murder inquiry it seems like the perfect solution though it soon becomes clear some members of the police force have no intention of playing nice with the new boy.
With his first case Dan is dropped in at the deep-end. A man is killed in a lay-by with a blast through the heart from a shotgun. The victim is a notorious local businessman, Edward Bray, a man with so many enemies there are almost too many suspects for the police to eliminate.
As tensions rise between Dan and the police he comes close to being thrown off the case until the
detectives realise that far from being a liability, Dan might actually be the key to tempting the
murderer into a trap.
The TV Detective is the first book in a classic crime series from Simon Hall, who until recently was
the BBC Crime Correspondent for the Devon and Cornwall area.

The books sounds interesting, am I right? When you'll read the extract you'll want to read right now! ;)

Dan was scribbling a couple of notes when a hammering on the van door stopped him. The beat was authoritative and somehow demanded instant attention.
Outside stood the tall man and squat woman detectives of last night.
‘Good afternoon,’ Dan said.
‘Is it?’ Adam Breen replied. ‘From what I can tell, to go with the demands of my very high profile murder case, I now have a whole new set troubles.’
‘Really? What?’
The detective gave him a cool stare. ‘You.’
‘Me?’
‘Yes. You.’
‘Ah.’
‘Ah indeed.’
‘So I’m coming to join you then?’
‘So it would appear. I’m always asking for more staff, particularly on a case like this. But I have to say you weren’t exactly what I had in mind.’
They held a look. Dan reached out a hand. Breen eyed it warily, then shook with a firm grip.
The woman did the same. Her grip was even stronger. ‘Suzanne Stewart. Sergeant Stewart to you,’ she added.
There was another pause as they all stared at each other. Until Nigel coughed pointedly.
‘We’re on air in fifteen minutes,’ he said.
Dan nodded. ‘Let’s sort out your interview, Mr Breen, then we can talk about the other stuff later.’
They walked over to where Nigel had set up the camera, looking back on the lay by, and Dan explained what would happen in the broadcast. Most interviewees, when faced with live television, showed at least a hint of nerves.
Not Adam Breen. He stood calmly, arms folded, waiting.
He was wearing a fine coat, which looked like cashmere. Today’s suit was a charcoal grey, and once again obviously made to measure. The only itch in the detective’s appearance was the shading of a beard, dark and pronounced, despite it being only half way through the working day.
The title music of Wessex Tonight played in his ear, then Craig, the newsreader came in.
‘An emotional appeal this lunchtime for public help in finding the killer of the notorious businessman Edward Bray,’ he intoned. ‘Wessex Tonight has been speaking to his father, about his shock at the killing. Our Crime Correspondent Dan Groves is at the lay by where Edward Bray was murdered.’
‘It was here, last night, that police found Mr Bray’s body.’ Dan gestured along the tarmac.
‘They believe he was killed just about where I now stand. A murder investigation is underway.’
Dan’s report played. When it ended, he introduced Adam Breen and asked, ‘So, how is the inquiry going?’
‘It’s moving quickly,’ he answered, still without a hint of nerves. ‘We’re working through Mr Bray’s movements yesterday. We’re also talking to anyone who might have met him in the last few days, and going through his business dealings, too. Effectively, we’re building up a picture of his life.’
‘To find a motive for the killing?’
‘That is one of my priorities.’
‘It’s a difficult investigation?’
‘Mr Bray knew many people, and had dealings with even more. His business interests were extensive. I expect this to be a sizeable and lengthy inquiry.’
‘But you’re confident you’ll find the killer?’
‘Yes, I am. I’ll tell you this now. It may take a while, given the size of inquiry, but rest assured. I will find them.’
Dan thanked the detective and handed back to the studio. He pulled out his earpiece and let loose a long breath. The maiden live broadcast of his new life had been successfully completed. The milestones were coming fast.
‘That was reasonably painless,’ Breen said, ‘Maybe even vaguely useful if it brings us some more information. Now I need to get back to Charles Cross to get on with the case.’
‘And I’ve got to get back to the studios to cut a longer report for tonight,’ Dan replied. ‘But tomorrow…’
‘Tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow.’
Dan waited for more, but nothing came. Breen just stared at him with a detective’s look of pure scrutiny.
‘So, what about me tomorrow?’ Dan asked eventually.
‘And you really want to do this?’
Adam Breen was a hard man to read. It was impossible to tell if he was irritated, or amused. Or perhaps both.
‘I think it could be good for the police,’ Dan said.
‘You’re doing this as a favour to us, are you? How kind.’
‘Maybe it could work for both of us.’
‘Maybe,’ the detective mused. ‘And maybe not.’
Dan was aware that Nigel and Suzanne Stewart were silently watching the strange exchange.
‘I’d like to give it a try, anyway,’ he said.
‘That sounds like what the Deputy Chief Constable told me. Right, then report to Charles
Cross for nine o’clock prompt, when your bizarre induction as a trainee detective will begin.’ Breen paused again, then added, ‘I can hardly wait.’

Dead As A Doornail by Tonya Kappes

Sheriff Kenni Lowry knows that there will be a murder as soon as he sees his grandad's ghost. She loves him really much, but hates to have to investigate murders!
This story's victim is a reviewer, Lucy Lowell, a really harsh reviewer, and you could suppose that there will be a lot of possible killers... But you know that killing is something more personal, so, who could have a strong enough motive to kill her?
Of course the mystery is interesting, but what keeps you glued to this series is all the community... Because this time we will attend to the mayor's wedding; you know that this will mean that Kenni will be the maid of honour... so be prepared for a book full of bridezilla scenes and a lot of "fun"!
This had been a fun and interesting read, full of twists and unexpected situations.
Ready to the wedding of the year?

Kid To Killer by Paul Elliott - Blog Tour

Kid To Killer by Paul Elliott
Genre: Fiction

This had been a paced read, compelling and addictive at the same time.
Our main character, Paul, just wants to fit somewhere, he is too rich for their own taste and he would gladly exchange the silver spoon for a plastic fork without a blink. But life as we know is never easy, so when he starts in the new school and his new friends are scared of the "zombies" of the neighbourhood, he just wants to help them... Sadly he is too naïve and confides in the wrong persons...
I believe in the law, but I also can understand the unsettling feeling that the police should be doing something more, not simply waiting that something worse will happen, but from this to being a Vigilante is a long path, that with the wrong friendship could end really bad...
This books makes the reader think about morality and justice, friendship and bullying... really a very interesting read, that let me say I can not wait to read the second part!
Ready to start the change?

Honor Kills by Nanci Rathbun - Blog Tour + Giveaway

Honor Kills by Nanci Rathbun
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Source: Great Escapes
Amazon

This had been a quite complicated case, with a man who disappeared 8 years ago, leaving no trace... now there's an obituary with his name... and his wife and two children demand answers... Lucky for them, Angie doesn't like leaving open cases, so she will do as much as she can to have all the answers this family deserves, even if they are not the ones they are searching... Ready?
I was quite surprised with this book, it is a really complex case where a man that has left his family has appeared dead... but why leaving the family on the first place? Was he running away or did he had a secret life?

It was an interesting reading about Angie's family link with the mob, she is not really proud of it, but for some cases, the help is worth the price... But you never know what will happen... they will help her solving this case or will she have more enemies than before?
I liked how the author, Nancy Rathbun, talked about the old people and homeless and how they treat the patients on some residences... It should be in everyone's minds, that the people that need more protection in the world are the children and the old people, we should always take care of them, they are important, had been important and will be important. Even if they are not the same they used to, we should never treat them with less respect than the one that they had won.
This is the third case of the Angelina Bonaparte Mysteries, but you can read it as standalone. There are a few characters that I am sure have been repeating on the series, but you feel connected with the characters and the plot even if you haven't read the other books.
Ready to discover what it really means to work with the mob?

Sounds interesting? Good luck in the Giveaway!

Full Moons, Dunes & Macaroons by Erin Johnson - Blog Tour + Giveaway

Full Moons, Dunes & Macaroons by Erin Johnson
Genre: Cozy Mystery

This is a new chapter in Imogen's life, a witch that was raised in the humans world and now is enjoying her life as a chef of the Royalty... apart from a few problems, nothing important... her brother is the most wanted person in all the Kingdoms, her boyfriend will marry in 48 hours with her fiancée and everything she is trying to cook is sour! So be prepared for another funny adventure of this lovely witch.

This is the fifth book of the Spells & Caramels series, and it will make a closure of some open plots we had open in the last books, so I will not recommend starting the series on this one, simply start from the first ones, they are worth it! ;)
This had been a very quick read, maybe because I was eager to discover more about Imogen's family and secret brother, whom in every book I've read I am starting to hate him more... Is he really protecting Imogen or he has a secret agenda?
This book story is mainly centred on Imogen feelings toward Hank, her boyfriend and King, that will marry her fiancée in the next 48 hours... of course I wouldn't be on Imogen skin, it has to be really difficult! And what is worse, Shaday, Hank's fiancée is a very nice woman that is simply obeying her parents decision, she didn't want to get married neither!
Between all this tragic-love story, there will be a murder, one that Imogen will use to disconnect from all her personal tragedies and that in the end will make the story fit on their own place...
I really loved this story, it was time to see some closure in Imogen's love life and discovering a little bit more about her brother, be prepared for a few twists!

Seny - Català; Ara i Sempre

I have to admit that Seny is a tricky word, if you search in Google Translator it would say is Sanity, but I totally disagree with this translation.
In Wikipedia, it translate Seny as form of ancestral Catalan wisdom or sensibleness. It involves well-pondered perception of situations, level-headedness, awareness, integrity, and right action; "a kind of refined good sense and self-realization".
We use it when we have to to decide an important think, we say "Tingues Seny", it could be translate as: "think thoroughly"...
This is the first time I didn't find an exact word to translate a Catalan word to English, but I suppose this is why I started this project, to show the world the Catalan language and all the curiosities about it! ;)
